MPAC.ie campaign

As salam wa alaikum Brothers and Sisters, I would like to draw your attention to the latest MPAC.ie campaign. The hope is to garner support within the Muslim community to lobby the national broadcaster for greater inclusion. There have been discussions in the past but as yet, Islam and Muslims remain on the fringe of society and largely alienated - RTE could offset this exclusion by following the example of Sweden and other European states which have dedicated shows to cater for their Muslim populations. These are tentative steps on the road to full equality and inclusion, but MPAC.ie believe that the more ordinary Irish people have an opportunity to engage with and understand Muslims and Islam, the better we can all deal with differences and suspicions fueled by media. Disengagement has not helped, people want to know about us, they want to know what we think and silence has benefited no one. It's time for Muslims to participate more actively and it's time for Ireland to understand that we are here to stay. Please take a few moments of your time and write to RTE.

Mujaahid

PS - you might also consider writing to An Post regarding Eid celebratory stamps (if they can print Christmas stamps for Christians, why not Eid stamps for Muslims???).

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign has just found out about an event being hosted by the Israeli Embassy this Friday 18th December (see the official invitation pasted below). It appears they have invited many women's rights, migrant and refugee groups to attend in what they call a lecture on "Migrant Women: Sharing the Israeli experience in Migrant absorption". This is a disgusting attempt to peddle soft-Zionism to progressive movements and organisations in Irish society. The reality is of course, very different; Israeli State racism against its own non-Jewish citizens and Palestinians in the occupied territories and the Palestinian Diaspora are well documented facts. In addition, the same Israeli State that is hosting this event regularly abuses Palestinian women's rights - for example, the UN noted in a report in February 2009:
"Palestinian women’s access to adequate prenatal, natal and post-natal medical care remains a matter of serious concern, impairing the fulfilment of the right of everyone to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health. It should also be noted that Israeli policies on closure may, in certain instances, amount to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment under article 16 of the Convention against Torture. Finally it is reiterated that the issue of pregnant Palestinian women giving birth at Israeli checkpoints must be understood within the context of the broader regime of the Israeli occupation and associated restrictions on movement, impacting as they do on all aspects of life in the occupied territories."
The title of this lecture would almost be laughable were it not so serious an issue. Therefore, the IPSC have called for a protest outside the D4 Berkely Hotel, 146 Pembroke Road, Dublin 4 (map -
http://tinyurl.com/ye9bh9l) at 12.30pm on Friday 18th December. We ask you to come along and protest this spurious and entirely hypocritical lecture with us. Please bring Palestinian flags and placards if you have them - the IPSC will also be providing some on the day. Also, if you are a member of any of the groups invited to attend this lecture, we would ask that you use your influence to get your organisation to refuse to attend the event, thank you.

In solidarity,Freda Hughes

Danbar Toys

Salams all, Danbar Toys, an Israeli company selling remote control toys, are now trading in the Blanchardstown shopping Centre. They are staffed by Israeli's and all products bear the '729' Israeli barcode. This protest is planned for 6.30-7pm on Wednesday 9th December at the Blue Entrance to the Blanchardstown shopping centre (near the cimenas, theatre and Leasureplex). It will not be a loud or obtrusive gathering, but we hope that the impact of the media coverage will raise awareness of Israel's apartheid regime and the BDS campaign.
This protest is organised by the IPSC and we encourage all to participate.
All the best,Wassalam

About the speaker;

“Shaykh Fraz Farhat is a graduate from the University of Leeds (Faculty of Engineering) and the Islamic University of Madinah (Faculty of Shari’ah). He regularly appears on Islam Channel's programme – Islam QA. He is well known and respected as one of the senior students of knowledge in the UK; Shaykh Fraz is active in the field of Dawah. '...Shaykh Fraz Farhat...well known for his piety, humility, zuhd, high moral character, strong personality and ofcourse his love for physics and mathematics!...' Dr. Abu Yusuf (Al-Kauthar Institute & Mercy Mission CEO)

Shyness should not prevent you from seeking knowledge and asking questions.

(Sahih al-Bukhari)

This course will help develop your understanding of the legal Islamic rulings on menstruation as they pertain to many aspects of your daily lives. It will also give you the ability to recognize the issues and to deal with them. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to answer wide variety of common questions such as;

Can I touch the Qur'an during menstruation?

Can I enter the Mosque?

I want to perform the Hajj and I'll use pills to delay my cycle as it's my only opportunity to go. I really can't take the risk of bleeding during Hajj. Is this a right choice?

I've missed two months of fasting due to post natal bleeding. What do I do?

I've just had a coil placed inside, and it has changed my regular cycle of 7 days to 13 days. Is this my new cycle?

I am bleeding but it's not red. Can I consider it as menstruation?

Fiqh of Menstruation - Its importance cannot be more emphasize as mature women spend approximately ¼ of her life in this state!

Followed by Q & A session and, this course is surely a not to be missed one.

(Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)
Our youth is the most testing time of our lives. We live in a time where we can forget the basic principles of the Islamic religion as we become engulfed into the metropolitan way of life. Not a day goes by without us being faced with a dilemma or a problem that can compromise our values. Even those of us who don’t believe in religion or take it seriously become trapped in an empty monotony know as “modern day living”. Today we are students…Tomorrow we are workers of the world…Some of us will remain followers…Others will become leaders……What we do with our youth marks who we are destined to be in our futures…
Where do you stand??

The BBC was accused last night of letting BNP bigot Nick Griffin 'play the martyr' amid bitter recriminations over his appearance on Question Time.

Senior MPs accused the corporation of whipping up controversy to maximise viewing figures - then crudely stage-managing the programme so he was under attack throughout from the audience and fellow panellists.

They said the attempt to expose his racist views risked backfiring because some voters would feel he had been unfairly treated.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson admitted the exposure would lead to a short-term bounce for the far-Right party, but predicted that in the long term it will have done them 'no good at all'.

'When the content sinks in I think people will recoil,' he said.

But other senior Labour and Conservative figures said the BBC risked long-term damage by allowing Question Time to be transformed into the 'Nick Griffin Show'.

While Question Time normally ranges across issues of the day, which this week included the postal strike and the economy, all but one of the questions selected focused on the BNP and its policies.

Mr Griffin, one of two BNP candidates elected to the European Parliament earlier this year, faced fierce attacks on race, immigration and the Holocaust.

Viewers heard him brand Islam 'wicked' and smear homosexuals as 'creepy'.

He went on to make inflammatory remarks about the composition of the audience, suggesting London was 'ethnically cleansed' and 'no longer British'.

Labour former Home Secretary David Blunkett said last night: 'The BBC played into Griffin's hands by managing to create a victim out of a perpetrator. Their totally unwarranted blanket coverage on news broadcasts before and after Question Time was blatant self-promotion.

'They made the format so obviously skewed that they have allowed him to play the martyr. It was all about him and the BNP, not about the issues of the day.

'They have achieved his victimhood and that may make people much more open to hearing what he has to say in the future.'

Former shadow home secretary David Davis said: 'The point of democratic discussion is to dissect the weaknesses and stupidities of extremists, not to make them the gift of martyrdom.

'David Dimbleby is old enough and wise enough to have been able to present a properly impartial exposé of Mr Griffin's many inadequacies without having to resort to such crude stage management.'

Labour MP Diane Abbott said Mr Griffin's appearance had given the BNP unnecessary credibility and exposure by 'putting him in the mainstream'.

She warned that many people across the country would have thought he was picked on by the other panellists.

But Labour minister Margaret Hodge, in whose Barking and Dagenham constituency the BNP won 11 council seats in 2006, insisted: 'The BBC gave Nick Griffin the opportunity to show himself up for what he is - flaky, dishonest and bigoted.

'I have been in Barking all day asking people about it, and one or two did say they felt he had been bullied. But overwhelmingly people thought it had exposed him as a bigot.'

Activists on far-Right websites condemned the BNP leader for being 'overawed' and 'flustered'.

One said: 'The public despise indecisiveness as they see it as weakness, and all these quotes from Nick's past make the party look bad.'

The BBC defended the programme, saying viewers would make up their own minds.

A spokesman said: 'It is normal for the programme to reflect topics that are in the news - people would accept that the BNP and Question Time have been prominent topics.'

PUBLIC DEBATE OBAMA’S AFGHAN WAR

PUBLIC DEBATE OBAMA’S AFGHAN WAR: Should foreign troops withdraw?
Date: Wed 15 July 2009 7pm
Venue: Davenport Hotel, Merrion Square, Dublin
Speakers:
* Robert Faucher (Chargé d'Affaires, US Embassy),
* Jonathan Neale (US Author),
* Sahar Saba (Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan).
Chairman: Deaglán de Bréadún.
Background Information
* Why has Obama declared Afghanistan "the good war?"
* Why are so many Western troops, including Irish military, involved in this war?
* Why is the anti-war movement calling for all troops to be withdrawn?
Afghanistan is descending into a hell-hole of chaos, corruption, crime and death. Estimates
of civilian deaths caused by the 2001 invasion vary from 6,300 to 23,600. In May this year,
U.S. planes dropped 2,000-pound bombs on three mud-brick villages in Western Afghanistan,
killing up to 140 people. Over 1100 coalition soldiers have also been killed.
The effects of the occupation have swelled support for the Taliban. The war is escalating
and has spilled over into neighbouring Pakistan where attacks by US drone planes and the
US backed Pakistani army assault on villages in the Swat Valley has left hundreds dead.
and, Trócaire says that up to two million people have been displaced.
Western forces are rowing ever further in behind the invasion. U.S. troop reinforcements,
some 30,000 soldiers are beginning to arrive in southern Afghanistan. added to the 32,000
already there. The White House also wants to give Pakistan nearly $1.5 billion a year
development aid and $400 million in fresh military assistance.
Europe is deeply involved. ISAF troops (International Security Assistance Force) working
under an expanded NATO command number 61,000 from 42 different countries, including at
least ten officers from Ireland. Since October 2006 This is truly a war waged by western
powers against a small poor country that has the misfortune to have a prized strategic position.
Yet the west’s war is not popular with Afghanis. Opinion polls show Afghan confidence in the U.S.
and the Afghan government plummeting, with now only 32% - down from 68% in 2005 - supporting the
US performance. Yet this is the war that Obama wants to make his own. The stakes are very high but
what is the war all about? Representatives from both the US Embassy (confirmed) and the Irish Dept.
of Foreign Affairs have been invited to debate American and Afghani anti war activists. Come along
and find out about this horrific situation.

Female Genital Cutting

Female Genital Cutting – Whose Problems, whose Solutions? (March 25, Galway)
The Galway One World Centre is holding a public meeting on the subject of Female Genital Cuttingon March 25th at 7pmin the GOWC, Bridge Mills, Dominick Street, Galway."Female Genital Cutting is seen primarily as a problem of parts of the continent of Africa and less attention is given to the practice being used within Western countries", said Ronan Conway, associate professor at the Department of Epidemiology at the Royal College of Surgeons and speaker for the evening. "However, designer laser vaginoplasty and vaginal rejuvenation are growth areas in plastic surgery within Western countries. How can we judge African societies as being barbaric and not condemn equally the cutting of women in the West solely to fulfil male masturbation fantasies?"Even as female genital cutting dies out in traditional societies, cosmetic genital surgery is a rapidly growing and secretive industry in 'developed' societies. Harmless consumer fad, or a new low point in the long story of exploitation of women? This event was originally scheduled for November 2008. However, due to the phenomenal demand, it has been organised again for March 25th. The talk is free of charge. For more information contact Co-ordinator, Galway One World Centretel 091 530590 / email

Grand Dinner will be able to mark the grand finale of the IAW

The Islamic Awareness Week (IAW), is an annual event held by Islamic Societies (ISOC) in most universities throughout the world coordinated by their umbrella organisation. In Ireland, it is Federation of Students Islamic Society (FOSIS).
In Dublin this year, 5 ISOCs (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Dublin College University and Dublin Institute of Technology join together in one IAW and it was held from the 6th until 27th February 2009. The theme chosen- 'We Belong Together' reflects the vision of the organizers to be able to be the forefront force for a unified society particularly in Ireland so that we may all live in peace and harmony despite of our religion, ethnicities and morale.
Among the activities held during IAW are Halal Food Fest, Hijab Fashion Show, Sports League, talks, charity bazaar, Quran recitation, video and photoshop class, competition and others. The IAW has also been a very fertile avenue for Islamic Societies to collect fund in support of the ongoing 'Humanitarian Fund For Gaza.'
For the very first time, this year, the IAW is having a Grand Dinner for its closing ceremony. The theme for this year's Grand Dinner is 'Humanity and Peace', which embodies a powerful message in conveying an understanding of a common ground between Muslims and non-Muslims in our society.
It is hoped that the Grand Dinner will be able to mark the grand finale of the IAW, as well as instilling awareness and to give understanding among members of the society about Islam generally and about muslim students society throughout Ireland specifically. In addition to that, we would like to rejoice in the last day of yet another term for the 48th FOSIS Ireland Committee (which will be having their AGM the next day) and reflect what have been done throughout this term.
So come one, come all, this will be a night to remember!
Proceeds from this dinner will go to Gaza.
Below are the details of this event:

Complete hijab الحجاب المكتمل

Complete hijab, besides the given requirements of clothing, also includes the moral conduct, behavior, attitude, and intention of the individual. A person only fulfilling the criteria of hijab of the clothes is observing hijab in a limited sense. Hijab of the clothes should be accompanied by hijab of the eyes, the heart, the thought, and the intention. It also includes the way a person walks, talks, and behaves. Therefore, the hypocritical use of hijab is not a good example of Muslim conduct

Fasting in solidarity with the people of Gaza صم من اجل غزة

Assalamu Alaikum,
Muslims around the world are fasting in solidarity with the people of Gaza until the offensive ends.
It is expected that the offensive is going to continue for another two or three weeks.
As Muslims, we are responsible and will be accountable for what is happening to Muslims (Palestine, Chechnya, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sudan, etc.) around the globe today.
The least we can do is fast in solidarity.
